What you need to know
The plain-English guidance that comes with this document.
- This notice does one job: it starts the conversation. The law expects allergen information to be available and, for loose food, backed by a conversation. A visible "please ask us" notice is what prompts a customer to speak up — put it where they order (the counter, the menu, the till, online). It works hand in hand with your allergen matrix: the notice invites the question, the matrix gives the accurate answer.
- A notice is not a substitute for knowing your dishes. "Ask us about allergens" only helps if the person asked can actually answer. Make sure every food handler knows where the allergen matrix is and how to use it. A notice with no knowledge behind it is worse than none.
- Be careful with "we can't guarantee" wording. A sensible line about a shared kitchen is honest and fair. But it doesn't remove your duty to give accurate information about ingredients — you can't hide behind a blanket disclaimer. Say it, mean it, and still have the real answer ready.
- Keep it visible and current. Faded notice tucked behind the till helps no one. Display it clearly, and if you take orders online or over the phone, make sure the same "please tell us about allergies" prompt is there too.
- Applies UK-wide. Allergen information rules apply across the UK. This notice supports them wherever you are; pair it with the allergen matrix and trained staff.
