What you need to know

The plain-English guidance that comes with this document.

  • Observation is how you actually deliver the EYFS. Watching what a child does, working out what it shows about their development, and planning the next step — "observe, assess, plan" — is the engine of early-years practice. This record captures it simply, without turning it into a paperwork mountain.
  • Keep it light and useful — don't drown in evidence. The EYFS has been deliberately trimmed to cut excessive paperwork. You don't need reams of photos and forms for every child every day; you need enough to know each child and plan for them. Quality of knowledge beats quantity of evidence — inspectors say so too.
  • The seven areas, and the prime ones first. Communication & language, physical development, and personal/social/emotional development are the "prime" areas that underpin the rest, especially for the youngest. Notice them everywhere.
  • The two-year progress check is a must. Between ages two and three you must give parents a short written summary of their child's development in the prime areas, and flag any concerns (linking with health where appropriate). Don't miss it — it's a specific EYFS requirement and a chance to catch needs early.
  • Share with parents — learning is a partnership. Next steps that parents can support at home are worth more than any tracker. A quick, warm conversation about "what's next" keeps parents engaged and helps the child.
  • It's about a child — store securely. Observation records are personal data about a child; keep them safe and share appropriately.
  • Professionally structured starting point — adapt and sign off. A manager/key person tailors this to your curriculum approach and the current EYFS; it's not "compliant out of the box". England-led — Wales, Scotland and NI have their own early-years curricula.
